An example of how to measure the diameter of a ring. The inside of this ring is approximately 18mm in diameter, making it a size 8, on the chart below.

Some people may already know your ring size you are by a letter, if so this is the easiest chart for you to use. You may also go into any jewelry store and have your correct ring size measured for your finger (via letter) which will ensure you have the correct size. If you are considering a wide band you may want to select the larger size for comfort on your finger.
